Miguel Rivera is the most ordinary boy. He lives in a small Mexican town and loves music. However, he is not destined to be with his beloved guitar: music is prohibited in Miguel's family. Despite the strict ban of relatives, the curious Miguel still manages to establish the identity of the disgraced great-great-grandfather. It turns out to be the greatest singer of the time, Ernesto de la Cruz. The Day of the Dead is coming - a religious holiday when the living can see their long-deceased relatives. Miguel is transported to the afterlife to meet the famous ancestor and receive his blessing for music lessons.
