In order to simply survive in Harlem, a person needs rigidity in decisions and the ability to fight back, but Ellsworth Raymond Johnson, in addition to these qualities, has absolute ruthlessness and organizational skills. Over time, he receives the nickname "Bumpy" from his colleagues in the criminal workshop, and gradually "rakes up" such tidbits as drug trafficking, weapons, and pimping. Business is growing by leaps and bounds, the empire is prospering, and "baited" lawyers regularly report raids and inspections.
Since everything is good only in fairy tales, at one glorious moment the FBI becomes interested in the hero and sends him to the most terrible prison of the Alcatraz power for ten years. After serving the term, the man arrives at the address of registration, with the intention of returning zones of influence and position in society. Unfortunately, the place has not been waiting for an owner for a long time, and in Harlem everything is run by Italian mafiosi from the family of Don Vincent Gigante, also known as "Chino". Confident that it is shameful to put up with such a manifestation of racial apartheid, Bumpy begins to look for allies who can move the impudent pasta into place. One of these is the former hardened bandit, and now the preacher of Islam, Malcolm X, but the hero makes the main bet on inciting hatred among the enemy, and comes with a tidbit to another leader of the Italian mafia, Frank Costello.
