In modern-day Paris, Diana receives a photograph from Wayne Enterprises of herself and four men, taken during the First World War. The daughter of Queen Hippolyta, Diana is brought up on the island of Themyscira, where the Amazons live - female warriors created by Zeus to protect humanity. Hippolyta explains to Diana the history of the Amazons, including how Ares became jealous of humanity and orchestrated its destruction. When the other gods tried to stop him, Ares killed everyone but Zeus, who used what was left of his power to hurt Ares and force him to retreat. Before he died, Zeus left the Amazons an island and a weapon, the Godslayer, to prepare them for Ares' return.
Hippolyta reluctantly agrees to have General Antiope, Hippolyta's sister and Diana's aunt, train her more strictly than any other warrior, although she initially forbids Diana from training to be a warrior. In 1918, Diana, now a young woman, rescues American pilot Steve Trevor when his plane crashes off the coast of Themyscira. Soon the island was invaded by German soldiers who pursued Trevor. The Amazons deal with the crew, but Antiope sacrifices herself to save her niece.
