"West Side Story" is based on the classic Shakespearean story of the tragic love of Romeo and Juliet, who belonged to the warring clans of Verona.
In the musical, and then in its first film adaptation, the action was moved to New York, in the mid-fifties of the last century.
Instead of warring Italian clans, the audience was presented with their counterparts - two street gangs. One of them is called "Rockets", and it includes the descendants of white-skinned immigrants, and the second unites the natives of Puerto Rico and is called "Sharks".
"Romeo" named Tony was a former member of the Rockets. He fell in love with his "Juliet", whose name is Maria, and she is the sister of the leader of the Sharks, Bernardo.
