The main character, detective Jack Radcliffe, unexpectedly receives a phone call from Ashley's alarmed niece, who asks for help. He rushes to her, but does not have time. She and her entire family are brutally murdered. He takes up the investigation. But suddenly Ashley calls him on the phone again.
