The series tells about four girls - Spencer, Hannah, Aria and Emily, whose friendship ended after the disappearance of their mutual best friend Alison. A year after her disappearance, the girls begin to receive cryptic messages from anonymous "A", who knows all their secrets - including those that only Alison knew - and threatens to reveal them. But Alison is dead. Who is sending these messages?
