The action takes place in the distant future, where people have the opportunity to escape from reality with the help of the OASIS computer game.

Teenager Wade Watts, who lives in the slums of a dirty Columbus, Ohio, like everyone else, spends most of his life in the fictional world of the game. Having learned that the creator of the OASIS after his death left a will - full control over the game and a huge amount of money to the one who solves all his riddles hidden in the game - the main character decides to participate in this quest.

After overcoming all the difficulties of the OASIS creator contest, Wade not only becomes the winner, but also learns about a completely new technology that allows OASIS users not only to fully experience being in the game, but also to record their impressions in reality.
